Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai season 3 is set to air in April 2022 (confirmed from their official website and Twitter account). Today, we are going to be taking a look and comparing a some of the best Kaguya-sama figures available on the market.
A little background behind the show; Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai is a Japanese romantic comedy manga series by Aka Akasaka. It began serialization in Shueisha’s seinen manga magazine Miracle Jump in May 2015 and was transferred to Weekly Young Jump in March 2016. It gained rapid popularity in Japan and now has sold over 15 million copies worldwide as of April 2021 (Kaguya-sama: Love Is War).
In the senior high school division of Shuchiin Academy, the student council president and vice president, Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya, appear to be a perfect match. Kaguya is the daughter of a wealthy conglomerate family, and Miyuki is the top student at the school and well-known across the prefecture. Although they like each other, they are too proud to confess their love, coming up with many schemes to make the other confess.
And now for our list of the best figures.
5. Kaguya Shinomiya FREEing Bunny Figure (1/4 Scale)
We’ll start with the beautiful and cunning VP of the student council, Kaguya Shinomiya. One of her most highly anticipated figures coming soon (January 2022 tentative date) is her FREEing ¼ scale bunny figure.
Following the release of Chika Fujiwara this year (which we’ll dive into next) Kaguya has been faithfully recreated measuring 17.3″ tall, her beauty and charm are turned up to 11 as she poses in a sexy black bunny girl outfit and gives a demure smile with slightly blushed cheeks.
The face sculpt on this figure is fantastic, almost mirroring her design perfectly, and the black and red color scheme with her ribbon shares a beautiful synergy. Many die hard collectors may claim that most FREEing bunny figures are generic and don’t look like the actual character, but this figure is the complete opposite.
Make sure to grab this figure fast if you’re on the fence, as many popular FREEing characters especially in the 1/4th scale range usually skyrocket in the aftermarket.
4. Chika Fujiwara FREEing Bunny Figure (1/4 Scale)
Up next is our adorable student secretary, Chika Fujiwara.
The cute, bubbly, and chaotic good Fujiwara often finds herself interfering with our two lovey-dovey protagonists while usually being blissfully unaware of the consequences of her actions.
The first Chika Fujiwara figure we’ll start with is the FREEing ¼ bunny which was released in April of 2021. Yet another masterpiece from FREEing, this bunny does a fantastic job of capturing Chika’s personality. The double peace sign and wide open mouth really reflect her cute, congenial attitude.
The one aspect of this figure which caused some controversy among collectors was Chika’s size. Standing at just slightly over 14 inches, Chika is one of the smaller FREEing ¼ scales on the market. While not confirmed, based on Miko’s height in the manga which has been revealed as 4’8”, fans were able to conclude that Chika is most likely in the 5’1” range making her one of the shortest characters. Again, not canon, but it seems very accurate.
Although some collectors may pass on it due to it being a couple inches shorter than most standing FREEing bunnies, her aftermarket price proves that many still love and cherish her as her price has seen an exorbitant increase with the demand. If you can find her with a sub $400 price tag, consider yourself quite lucky.
3. Chika Fujiwara Aniplex/Revolve Figure (1/7 Scale)
Released in January of 2021, this figure by Aniplex immediately became a product of interest for all Kaguya-sama fans. The pose and design was faithfully recreated from one of the most iconic scenes from the manga, and hence immediately was a favorite among collectors. The scene is depicted here:
Chika Fujiwara also received a figure based off of this scene to pair with Kaguya. This was also one of the first Kaguya anime figures announced which paved the way for more figures to be developed (such as the FREEing bunny) due to the well-received popularity of this figure. It averages around the $250 mark.
If you consider yourself a true Kaguya-Sama fan, then this is a figure that should definitely be on your radar.
2. Chika Fujiwara Wave Figure (1/7 Scale)
Released in August of 2021, this Chika figure is easily the best one on the market for 2 main reasons; Capturing a scene from one of the most iconic dance scenes in anime and the quality of the figure.
For anyone that has been living under a rock for the past 2 years, or simply just doesn’t follow romcoms, the “Chikatto Chika Chika” dance is the ED of episode 3 in which Fujiwara sings and performs the dance. It was sang by the actual voice actor of Chika, Konomi Kohara.
If you watch the video, you can see exactly where this figure got its inspiration from. It is hailed by many Kaguya fans as the best current Chika figure on the market, and yet is still surprisingly affordable sitting at about $130.
1. Ai Hayasaka Figure (1/7 Scale)
In my opinion, the truly best Kaguya-sama figure that has been revealed is Ai Hayasaka.
So far, this is her first and only figure to be announced and capture’s her elegant beauty through a very simple design.
Hailed by many as the true best girl of the show, Hayasaka is Shinomiya’s maid and serves as an employee of the Shinomiya household. She and Kaguya have been close friends since childhood, almost even sisters due to Hayasaka growing up in the same household. She wears a maid outfit when tending to the Shinomiya household. As a student at Shuchi’in Academy, she wears a modified high school uniform to match up with kogal fashion and a sweater wrapped around her waist which is how this figure is modeled after.
The pose and detail on this figure is perfectly executed. The detail on her hair and eyes is all but a spitting image of her design from the manga. Even the details on her handbag have been meticulously crafted.
Since this is a limited exclusive release, AND her only figure announced at the moment, I would strongly advise pre-ordering her before her original 2022 release as her price is sure to rise in the aftermarket. You can pre-order her now for around $160.
Honorable Mention: Miyuki Shirogane Nendoroid
This article wouldn’t be complete if we left out one of the most imperative characters of the series; the smart and prestigious president Mikuyki Shirogane.Miyuki currently only has one figure on the market which was released in December of 2020 for retail price of 5,100 JPY ($44 USD)
Miyuki is a handsome young man with blonde hair and dark blue sanpaku eyes. Due to his constant sleep deprivation and nearsightedness, his eyes appear to glare. He usually wears the regular Shuchiin Academy black male uniform adorned with the Aiguilette, the golden chain-like accessory around his neck that is passed down by the previous generations of the Shuchi’in Academy presidents as per his authority as the student council president.
It’s quite a simple but appealing figure, it features Miyuki wearing the Shuchiin uniform and comes with three face plates including his serious expression reminiscent of the show’s key visual, a cuter smiling expression, and a “That’s it!” expression! Optional parts include his smartphone and a pair of the cat ears that looked so good on him Kaguya had a tough time showing restraint.
What is particularly interesting about this figure, is the inner cardboard sheet of the packaging functions as a background sheet of the student council room. It can be displayed with the background sheet included with Nendoroid Kaguya Shinomiya to create an even larger scene of the student council room.
Fans had an overall mixed feeling about this figure as many agreed that his hair design on the final product fell a little flat due to the lack of shading and difficulty to get it to fit right. Otherwise he makes a great addition to any fan of the series, especially if you already own Kaguya or Chika.
His current market price hovers around the $80-90 range.
